Using Terminal in windows might have many reasons like I create contents in a windows PC and also have to run terminal for check my VPS (servers).

So basically wat is WSL?

WSL, the Windows Subsystem for Linux, is a free, optional feature of Windows 10 that allows Linux programs to run on Windows. It provides you with a Windows version of the bash shell and a compatibility layer that permits many Linux programs to run natively on your Windows machine.”

Now you may got the idea what is WSL and why you will need this. But the WSL is not enabled in any windows PC by default.

So how can you turn on it? Let’s Dig in..

The very first thing is these are called “optionalfeatures” and it depends on your choices that you want to use or not.

  1. Open the “RUN” from start menu. (You can directly search “RUN” and hit enter or you can press Win+R which will also fireup the “RUN”.

2. Now type “optionalfeatures”.

3. Now it will pop-up a window.

4. Now click on the box “Windows Subsystem for Linux” which is in sort “WSL”. And click ok.

It will take few minutes to applying the settings and once it’s done, it will ask you for restart your PC.

No after restarting the PC you have to install a Linux distro which is basically a terminal.

5. Open the “Microsoft Store” and search for “Linux”.

6. There you can see many Linux distros.

7. I will go with “Ubuntu 18.04 long term support”. And you can chose whatever you want.

8. After installing the Ubuntu just open or launch it and it will take few minutes to installing the rest of resources.

9. After it will ask for a username and password. (just put a username and password and hit enter). Don’t forget the password as its important and ask you each time to enter password whenever you will update or install any applications in terminal.

10. I have run “sudo apt update”. And its working just fine.

Even I also installed C compiler and run hello world without having any problem. The rest of the steps you can see in our new youtube channel here.
